+ loved the atmosphere, and the food in the brassserie was good - but the food in the dining room was execrable - the worst ever. Orchestra members were intimidating to diners; drink ordered (Bacardi and coke called a Cuba Libre) was on card at 2000huf - when bill came it was 2200huf! 10% added to the bill automatically. In the spa which is not necessarily run by the hotel but by another company, two American girls discussing it said it was "the least user-friendly experience" of her life. Agreed. I was so looking forward to a two day relaxing stay in The Gellert - its reputation preceded it...historic, elegant, from a bygone era...Not! Appalling staff/customer relations; dangerous, shambles of a breakfast self-service; very very poor food in the dining room with a five piece live orchestra intimidating diners into choosing a tune then hanging around at the table for a tip. Budapest is a stunning city - The Gellert has an enviable reputation, but it will not be long before people will realise that a sense of history can not be enough to compensate for the bad food and service, and they will go elsewhere.
