Hungarian State Opera House and its shows

Budapest Opera House - a

If you succeed in purchasing tickets for one of the featured shows, the night at the Hungarian State Opera House might just be the most memorable one you will spend in Budapest.
With a tradition of more than 300 years in performing pieces of classical music, Hungarian artists got the perfect place to host their talents in 1884 - in the presence of emperor Franz Joseph I., the magnificent building of the Budapest Opera House opened its gates to the public. Beside the National Museum of Hungary and the famous edifice of Pesti Vigado, the State Opera House is one of the most representative and treasured historic buildings and monuments of the Hungarian capital city.
Located on the well-known boulevard Andrassy ut, the facade of the building offers a spectacular sight; the architecture of this genuine masterpiece harmonically blends elements of the Neo-Renaissance and Baroque styles and is the work of designer Ybl Miklos. The interior was decorated by the greatest Hungarian artists of the period and it features wrought iron lamps at the entrance, marble columns in the foyer, a magnificent main staircase, as well as murals on the vaulted ceiling, beautiful arches over the central stage, sculptures in the royal box and huge bronze chandeliers in some of the halls.
During the more than one hundred years of functioning, the amazing outlook of the Hungarian Opera House didn't change at all - apart from backstage modernisations and reconstructions to keep up with the technological development, and from necessary refurbishments and renewals to preserve the interior design, the building still stands in its original state, as proof of quality craftsmanship and exquisite taste.
The unique setting of the National Opera House is the professional home of many artists welcomed by the most prestigious stages in the world; local as well as guest stars entertain the lovers of high culture night by night. Whether you want to see a monumental set design and original props, or want to witness singers perform roles in many different shows, the Budapest Opera is the right place to visit. For concerts, opera and ballet shows inspired by the works of classical composers you can either come here or to the equally famous Erkel Theatre, that also belongs to the same group of organizers. Bizet, Tschaikovski, Mozart, Bach, Puccini, Verdi or Wagner and their best known pieces (such as: Tosca, The Magic Flute, Carmen, Swan Lake, Rigoletto, Carmen, Siegfried) are all featured this opera season.

If you aren't lucky enough to get a ticket and attend one of the shows, you can still see the Opera from the inside as well. For a fee of 10 Euro per person, simply join a group and visit the building itself - the tours begin each day from 3 and 4 PM in the lobby, and there is a guide offering live commentary (in English, German, Spanish, Italian and French languages) about the historical background and the technical details concerning the architecture of the edifice.
