Open air programs for all ages
The Budapest Fair - held on the last weekend of June - is a two-day celebration, the Municipality of Budapest's gift to the city's citizens. The series of programmes was first held in 1991 to remember the withdrawal of Soviet troops. Over the years the great bustle of activity has become a highly popular event, a cultural festival where people can enjoy freedom, celebrate and take part in the wide range of high standard events.
The date of the Budapest Fair also marks the beginning of summer and is perhaps increasingly coming to resemble the Midsummer festivities that are so popular in other countries. It is also linked to Music Day which is observed then in many countries around the world. The main consideration in organising the Fair is to preserve the cheerful carnival atmosphere and provide quality cultural programmes for all age groups. Besides the programmes for children - a type of event that is often lacking - musicals, light music and classical music also play an important role. This series of events is very popular because the colourful, quality programmes are free of charge.
