|
A masterpiece of 19th century engineering
The first permanent bridge crossing the Danube was The Chain Bridge, built between 1839-49, initiated by Count Istvan Szechenyi. It was a great leap forward in engineering at that time. During the World War II it has been destroyed by the German forces. The 380 meter long bridge was reopened after 100 years from its first opening, in 1949.
