Ferihegy Airport terminal buildings

A gateway to Central and Eastern Europe, Ferihegy Airport Budapest is located 15 kms away from the center of the Hungarian capital city. Ferihegy Airport provides a comfortable and pleasant transit-place to thousands of travellers each month and it hosts the flights of all major airlines in the world, including Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, Alitalia, Delta Airlines and the national carrier company of Hungary, Malev.

Planning and designing as well as the first period of building Ferihegy Airport began as far back as 1939 - the function of the airport was meant to be a combination between civil and military.

Up until the autumn of 2004, Terminal 1 of Ferihegy Airport (originally built in 1950) was mainly used for cargo, light aircraft and the occasional charter flights; the more modern Ferihegy Terminal 2 used to be split into sections A & B: Terminal 2A was the home of the local company Malev and 2B of  all other international carriers.

After a reconstruction period of nine months, the technical opening of Ferihegy Terminal 1 was held in July 2005 - after the demolition of the oldest terminal of Budapest a new, reinforced building took shape, held by a steel structure of several hundred tons; all the service engineering and electric systems of the building as well as all the connecting public utility conduits and the air-conditioning systems were renewed.

The area is about 24 thousand square meters and has been declared a national monument - specialists have thorouhgly reserarched archive photographs and restored everything according to the original state, blending tradition and modernity. 19 ticket offices, 10 arrival gates and 4 luggage claim conveyor belts serve the public; the parking lot has been extended to 300 individual spaces and the new environment of Ferihegy Terminal 1 can handle a passenger traffic of up to 2.5 million people each year. The flights of seven airlines are completely hosted by Terminal 1: Easyjet, Germanwings, Malmö Aviation, Norwegian Air, SkyEurope, Sterling and Wizzair.

Both Ferihegy Teminal 1 and Terminal 2 offer executive/business lounges, restaurant and bar facilities, duty free and regular shops,as well as public services such as post offices, toilets and waiting rooms, just like a well-equipped mall.

Transfer possibilities:

Hungarian Airport Authorities (LRI) provide the passengers a shuttle service that offers transfers for about 10 Euro / person / ride; the minibus sets off from its own service desk at Ferihegy Airport each time a plane lands and a group of passengers gathers and requests it, then it drops off the travellers one by one at their destination throughout the city.

Another alternative is the airport bus that departs from and arrives to Erzsebet Square (right in the city center) every thirty minutes – tickets can be purchased from the driver for about 2.5 Euro / person / ride.

Another means of public transportation are represented by buses number 93 that run from Ferihegy Airport and the final station of the Blue Metro Line (at Kobanya-Kispest); a ticket costs  about 0.5 Euro / person / ride.

You can also take a taxi – there is a large number of cars waiting in front of the terminal buildings. The cost of a ride to the city center can be anything between 25 and 35 Euro, depending on your luck. It is highly recommended that you agrre with the driver in advance upon the cost to your exact destination, and never use un unmarked vehicle.

Last but not least, there are cheap and reliable transfer services you can benefit of, if you book your transfer online, before even arriving to Budapest. A ride costs 22 Euro for two persons (the price increases with about 7 Euro for every other couple of people), and it is a private car that will take you directly to your destination, without taking care of other passengers first.
