Longhorned Gray Steppe Cattle

Longhorned Gray Steppe cattle is a true Hungarian breed, the foremost breed in Hungary up until the beginning of the 20th century. Its prominence is earned by its usefulness in many fields. As tractive power, cattles were yoked in teams of four or even more to pull wagons carrying merchandise, sometimes in longer caravans. As meat, it was favored in many European cities, buchards liked to buy it due to its high resistance to illness. For a long time, held its pominence as a genetic resource, the breed was selected for early maturity and heavy muscling. In addition, some lines were selected for increased milk production.

It was never without hazards to tend the flock, the cowherds gathered legends on the Hungarian plains, and appear on many paintings in their peculiar clothing. Once called "Hungarian gold", the number of these beautiful animals have decreased gradually, but One herd can still be found at the open-air museum at Hortobagy.
