City Hotel Matyas was the first member of the City Hotel chain. The hotel - established above the famed Matyas Cellar Restaurant - is located in the centre of Budapest just a couple of minutes from the most famous pedestrianized shoping area, the Vaci. The Matyas Cellar Restaurant, named after the great Hungarian king Mátyás, opened in 1904. The house serves authentic Hungarian foods - fish soup, Dorozsma carp, Matyas platter, strudels etc. - accompanied by the finest wines of the country and Gypsy music played by members of the Lakatos dynasty at midday and in the evenings. Beautiful stained glass windows and frescoes recount scenes from the life of King Matthias. Waiters and waitresses serve at table dressed in authentic costume.
