October 23 - Revolutiuon of 1956 |
|
Uprising against the sovjet invadersThe 1956 revolution and struggle for independence were the Hungarian people's greatest national act in the 20th century, done by its own strength and will. October 23 became a symbol in the period when the Kádár regime was breaking up, and October 23, 1989 was chosen as the day to proclaim the new republic. This was a continuation and fulfillment of the purposes of '56. The dreams of '56 at last came true when the "people's republic" of communism was replaced by the state of a free country's free citizens. That is why Parliament in 1991 declared this day a national festival. Budapest Hotel Booking - Check availability and best rates |
