The First Underground Railway of the Continent
Budapest's first underground railway was built in 1896. This was the second of it's kind after London's railway, and the first on the Continent. The tracks run below the the street level from the City Center to the City Park. Riveted iron pillars support the 6 metres wide tunnel and the stations, where wooden kiosks and ceramic tiled walls provide the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century. After Budapest's second railway, the Metro was built in 1970, the first underground railway became known as the "Little Underground".
