The show was very good and enjoable. Afterwards we decided to take one of the taxis parked outside back to our hotel even though it was not far, but my husband's heel was giving him trouble. Our tour guide warned us about the taxis, but was not specific. He said to negociate the price before hand, which we did. We told him we would not pay more than 10 Euro tops. He agreed to that. During the short ride I pulled out a 10 Euro bill and handed it to my husband. While we were stopped under a street light I saw that it was the correct bill. At the entrance of the street to our hotel, the driver stopped and told us that the meater had reached 10 Euro. It was dark there. My husband handed him the bill and right away he turned on the dome light in the car, showed him a 2,000 Huf bill and said that was the wrong amount. At first my husband thought I had handed him the wrong bill, but I always kept the two currencies in different wallets. That driver had very nimble fingers and switched those two bills around quickly. I still had the wallet with the Euros in my hand and my next small bill was 20 Euros. He saw that and said he could give us change. To make a long story short, we paid him then with the Hungarian money, but I don't know anymore how much. We walked the half block to our hotel and once there I discovered that my 20 Euro bill was gone also! He got four times the agreed upon much inflated fare! Lesson of the story: Before you pay, insist that the dome light is turned on and mention the amount of the bill. Other than that, we had a wonderful stay in Budapest and hope to return one day. I found the apartment-hotel combination ideal, both allowing one to enjoy a highly varied and sumptuous breakfast, and the stove, utensils and refrigerator in the room allowing preparation of an easy evening meal without the necessity of always going out. ALL the staff were extremely friendly, helpful, highly competent and professional. Room cleanliness was excellent. I am a fussy person, and even in comparison with some 5-star hotels I have occasionally stayed at, the Charles Hotel, if you stay in the deluxe rooms with AC, comes near the top ! Rooms without AC are more problematic in the summer since open windows let in a lot of noise from the busy street downstairs. Apart from this aspect, the hotel is highly recommended for both family and business travellers." Sarah Schrire (Solo traveler) from Modiin, Israel (2007. 09. 06.) |
