The building of the Keleti (East) Railway Station, originally called Budapest Main Railway Station, was completed in 1884. It is the busiest Railway Station of the capital, joining four major rail lines (Gyor-Vienna, Hatvan-Miskolc, Szolnok-Bekescsaba-Arad, Kelebia-Beograd). The railway station is located at the eastern end of Rakoczy Boulevard (leading to the Danube on the western end), in between Thokoly Street and Kerepesi Street. Metro line 2 provides great public transportation connections.
The station is located in a monumental (44x188x31.5 metre) hall, a unique architectural achievement of its time. The elegant facade, renovated in 1990, includes allegorical statues. The main door is guarded by the statues of James Watt and George Stephenson.
