Austria, officially the Republic of Austria, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The capital city is Vienna. Austria is a largely mountainous country due to its location in the Alps. Although Austria is cold in the winter, summer temperatures can be relatively warm reaching 20-35 degrees Celsius. Visits to Austria mostly include trips to Vienna with its Cathedral, its wine pubs and romantic Waltz music flair. Other popular destinations include Salzburg (birthplace of Mozart) Innsbruck (capital of Tyrol surrounded by the Alp) and the Danube valley with its vineyards, for example in Wachau or Dunkelsteinerwald. The Austrian skiing, hiking and mountaineering resorts in the Alps are just as popular as the family-friendly recreation areas (the Witches's Water in Tyrol, for example). The pretty Austrian lakes draw many visitors as well (Wörthersee in Carinthia, Wolfgangsee and other lakes in the Salzkammergut).
