Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus is a Eurasian island country in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, 75 kilometres (47 miles) from Turkey. Other neighbouring countries include Syria and Lebanon to the east, Israel to the southeast, Egypt to the south, and Greece to the northwest. The country consists of the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the region. The climate is temperate and Mediterranean with dry summers and variably rainy winters. The landscape includes a central plain (Mesaoria) with the Kyrenia and Pentadactylos mountains to the north, and the Troodos mountain range to the south and west. The major cities are the capital Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta, and Kyrenia.
