Finland, officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country situated in Northern Europe. It is bordered with Sweden to the west, Russia to the east, Norway to the north while Estonia lies to its south across the Gulf of Finland. Finland is a country of thousands of lakes and islands - the landscape is mostly flat, with only a few hills. Southern Finland has a northern temperate climate, as it is continuously warmed by the Gulf Stream. Although many tourists visit for the ideal weather during the summer, winter also attracts hundreds of thousands for its Christmas festivities and winter sports, such as skiing, dog sledding and Nordic walking. Lapland, the extreme north of Finland, is so far north that the Aurora Borealis, atmospheric fluorescence, is seen regularly in winter. This exquisite spectacle draws people from all around the globe. Throughout the summer, the everlasting sunlight provides an opportunity for an array of outdoor activities, including golf, fishing, yachting, lake cruises, hiking, kayaking, as well as a wide range of international festivals, markets and performing arts.
