Great Britain is the largest island of the British Isles. It lies to the northwest of Continental Europe, with Ireland to the west, and makes up the larger part of the territory of the United Kingdom. It is the largest island in Europe, and eighth largest in the world. It is surrounded by over 100 smaller islands and islets. The country has a temperate climate, with plentiful rainfall all year round. The capital, London, has over 7 million citizens. The city is one of the world's leading business, financial and cultural centres, as well as a major tourist destination, with four world heritage sites and numerous iconic landmarks (the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye), along with famous institutions such as the British Museum and the National Gallery. Its main geographical feature is the River Thames, which runs through the city from the southwest to the east.
