Luxembourg is a landlocked country in Western Europe between Belgium, France and Germany. The region has a modified continental climate with mild winters and hot summer months, with a lot of rain all year round. The capital, Luxemburg, has spectacular valleys and plateaus, so it was nicknamed the "Gibraltar of the North". Sites include the Grand Ducal Palace, Place Guillaume, Place d'Armes, and Cathedrale de Notre Dame. Other popular cities are Mertert on the Moselle river - once a busy harbor, and Echternach, a small town on the eastern border, the country's oldest town, based on an old monastery founded in 698.
