The Netherlands (also called Holland) is a Benelux country in Western Europe, facing onto the North Sea and the United Kingdom, and bordered on land by Germany and Belgium. The country has many cities and towns of interest to travellers. Amsterdam is the capital, with impressive architecture, lovely canals that criss-cross the city and great shopping. The Hague seats the Dutch government, along with the residence of the Queen, and offers great architecture, some of it picturesque, such as the medieval government complex of the Binnenhof, some grand and stately, like the mansions on Lange Voorhout. Rotterdam once had the world's largest harbour, now it is second behind Shanghai. In the northern part, Haarlem is the centre of a flower-growing district, and the export point for flower bulbs - the famous Keukenhof gardens are nearby. Delft is a historic city with traditional architecture, canals, bikes, and the world famous blue and white ceramics.
