Spain is a diverse country in Mediterranean Europe, sharing the Iberian Peninsula with Portugal at the western end of the Mediterranean Sea. Spain is sometimes a surprise to people who know its reputation for great beach holidays. The landscape includes lush meadows, snowy mountains, huge marsh, as well as deserts. Spain is the home of the vibrant coastal city of Barcelona, the famous running with the bulls at Pamplona, and the city of Sevilla, where flamenco was born. The capital, Madrid, is located almost exactly in the geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Some of the most famous tourist areas are: Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, and Plaza de Colón - some of these being spread up past a major main street, the Gran Via.
