Devín Castle, Hrad Devín or Devínsky hrad is situated on a cliff at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The area, settled since pre-historic times, now belongs to the city of Bratislava. Based on a Slavic castle founded in the 8th century, a stone castle was built here during the 13th century to protect the western frontier of the Hungarian Kingdom. In the 15th century, a palace was added. The Castle was never been taken, but was destroyed by retreating forces of Napoleon I of France. Today, it is an important national symbol. The building complex hosts exhibitions belonging to the City Museum of Bratislava, open every day except for Monday, from 10am to 5pm on weekdays, and from 11am until 6pm on week-ends.
