Vay Castle - Vaja

The township of Vaja is situated in the northeastern corner of Hungary, in Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg county. The historic settlement offers a castle fort, and a nice lake, which is a nature conservation area.
The Renaissance-style Vay Castle was built in the 16th century, and underwent some Baroque remodeling a century later. The castle fort now hosts a museum to commemorate the life and achivements of Ádám Vay, who was an important political figure at the beginning of the 18th century, during the Rákóczy freedom fight. The castle also gives home to the Rákóczi Tárogató Association, where musicians play a unique Hungarian wind instrument.
