Fertorakos – Quarry |
|
Fertorakos is a unique town in the Ferto Region, which is part of the World Heritage Sites, located in western Hungary, 10 kilometers northwest of Sopron. The town almost in its entirety consists of historic buildings, including a Mithras-Sanctuary from the 3rd century, and a bishop’s castle from the 13th century.
The Quarry in the northern part of town was in use as early as the Roman Era. Stones for the town of Scarbantia (today’s Sopron) were taken from this area. In 1970, a cave theatre was established in the quarry, with primarily opera performances during the summer months. Additional sights in town include a water mill with a sundial, a crystal museum, and a local history exhibition. Fertorakos – Quarry - nearest hotels
