The Basilica in Gyor is located at the conjunction of the Mosoni-Duna and the Raba rivers, on Kaptalan-hill, across the Bishops Castle. The building is a unique historical sight in and of itself as well, but its importance is strengthened by the fact that the St. Lesleys herma, a major national relic is kept in the interior.
The basilica-church was established by St. Stephan, Hungarys first king. Originally, it was built in Roman style during the 11th century, but multiple reconstruction and renovation phases resulted in the dominance of the Baroque style on the building, with a Classic-style façade. The interior space is sectioned into three aisles by two rows of pillars. Beautiful paintings decorate the ceiling. The southern wing includes the Hedervary-chapel, built in 1404, which includes the tomb of Vilmos Apor, the first martyr bishop of Gyor. Visitors may see a unique historical exhibition in the treasury. ![]() ![]() Gyor Basilica - nearest hotels
