The town of Veszprem is the highest-laying county seat in Hungary, located in the western part of the country, north of Lake Balaton. Local history and architecture spans time back to the time the Huns entered the Carpathian Basin. The town, built on seven hills, is also called the city of queens, as it was the favorite dwelling place of Gizella, wife of the first Hungarian king. In 1001, the Catholic Church established a bishopric here, and the Hungarian queens were crowned throughout the centuries.
The St. Michaels Basilica, located in the castle, is the first and oldest cathedral in Hungary. It is the most prominent building on the Holy Trinity Square, with windows ornamented with pictures of saints. The castle district also includes the Gizella Chapel, ruins of the St. Georges Chapel, the fire tower, the castle gate (with a tower, which includes a museum), the Queen Gizella Museum, and the statue of Queen Gizella and King Stephan on the northern part, overlooking the city. ![]() ![]() Veszprem Basilica - nearest hotels
