The town of Kecskemet is located southeast of Budapest. Due to a straight freeway, it is easy to reach from the capital. The agricultural city is rich in historical heritage as well as in cultural sights.
The town includes the Katona Jozsef Theatra, the building of which was designed by the renowned Viennese architects, Fellner and Helmer, at the end of the 19th century. Once called the Town Theatre, it was named after Jozsef Katona two decades later. The building was renovated in the 1980's, and can now accommodate 600 people in its auditorium. The hall and the stairway leading to the gallery please the eye with neo-baroque ornaments. The theatre holds performances in two additional locations besides the main stage.
