Goat Church - Sopron |
|
The Goat Church, with its well-proportioned, fine tower, is a dominant landmark on the main square of Sopron. Built by franciscan friars at the end of the 13th century, it is a beautiful piece of early Gothic architecture, while the interior is dominated by Baroque elements. The church received its name from a goat ornament on the facade of the tower, as well as the coat of the builder, Henrik Geisel, depicting a goat on a silver field. In addition, several goat motives ornament the balcony of the interior.
Visitors can see beautiful paintings, as well as a unique pulpit originally built by wood, later covered by marble, once used by Janos Kapisztran. Five parliament meetings were held here at the second half of the 15th and during the 16th century, followed by three coronations during the 17th. Goat Church - Sopron - nearest hotels
