The town of Sarospatak is located in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen County, in the northern part of Hungary, at the feet of the northern mountains, along the Bodrog River, at a 70-km distance from Miskolc. The settlement enjoyed unique town rights as early as the 13th century, and later became a free town of the king. Historical writings often refer to it as Patak.
The Rakoczi Castle was built by Peter Perenyi in the middle of the 16th century. The red tower had been already built at this time. The renaissance castle enjoyed its prime during the next century, when it belonged to the Rakoczi family. The most valuable part of the building complex, the Lorantffy-loggia was built during this era. The historic building and the castle museum can be visited every day except for Mondays.
