The town of Szerencs is situated in the northeastern part of Hungary, in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen county, 35 kilometers from Miskolc, at the feet of the Szerencsi hills. The area has been settled since pre-historic times. According the Anonymus, Hungarian tribe leaders made camp here as well. In the 12th century, a monastery was established. Local sights include the sugar museum, the postcard museum, the toy museum and the Rakoczy Castle.
The castle fort in Szerencs was built on the foundation of the monastery in the middle of the 16th century. This fort was a two-storey building, defended by pale fencing, with a tower in the southwestern corner. Additions and Renaissance style remodeling followed, producing the present-day stone window frames. After the Rakoczi freedom fight, the building lost its fort designation, and was converted into a castle. As a historical building, it can be visited every day except for Mondays.
