Kathryn Andersen (Hope Valley, Rhode Island, USA)

I chose the Gellert Hotel because I like to go to big old hotels. I had seen a photo of the indoor swimming pool and read about the baths. I had also read that some of the rooms were still a little run-down. I was not expecting a fabulous room because I booked a single over the Internet and I figured I would get a room nobody else requested.
My room was small, but it had a nice sized bathroom. It was quiet. The furnishings were in good shape and the TV worked. The wardrobe only had four hangers, but probably people don't stay very long for the most case. The doors were interesting, white enameled metal doors.
There was a business center where I used the Internet service for about $4 for a half hour, which seemed to be a typical rate for hotels. The bistro restaurant on the main floor was very good and attractive. There was also a restaurant on the mezzanine floor where gypsy music played on Saturday nights. I did not eat there. The buffet breakfast in the breakast room was good, with enough variety to suit people of many nations.
The hotel was clean and the staff were accommodating. On each floor there were stained glass panels at the top of the staircases. There was an elevator with beautiful ironwork which took guests down to the baths. The baths were old, no denying it, but well attended by guests and other paying citizens alike. The common pool was lovely. In the women's baths, few women went nude, just the older women and a few who were from cultures where nudity is not a big deal. Most of the tourists wore suits.
The location of the hotel was great. Trams ran regularly in front of it, going across the river to Pest. One could walk over the Liberty Bridge in a few minutes and be at the big city market or get onto the Metro underground. I did not have time to go up to the Castle Hill stretch, which was on the Buda (hotel) side of the river. I stayed there four nights. The last day I was there, I discovered the Gellert's Coffee Shop. I would stay at the Gellert again. I loved Budapest's buildings and wore out my feet walking all over.
