The town of Eger, located in the northeastern part of Hungary, in Heves County, is exceptionally rich in historical buildings. Apart from various world-famous museum, local sights include the castle and the Istvan Dobo castle museum.
On castle hill, a fort stood as early as the Arpad-dynasty kings, which served as a protection resort for the bishop of Eger, but was destroyed in the 13th century. Later on, the hill was surrounded by a strong stone wall, and a large outer fort was built on one of the lower hills, as the first line of defense. In 1552, the Turkish invasion army was unable to take the castle fort, even though they greatly outnumbered the Hungarian army defending it. This event became famous through a novel written by Geza Gardonyi. In the castle museum, the bishop�s palace includes an exhibition on the history of Eger, the gallery presents paintings from the 16-19th centuries, and the prison exhibition sheds light on the proceedings and instruments of execution and racking.
