The town of Eger is a prominent educational and cultural centre in Heves County. Most of its historic sites are known all over the world. At the time when Hungary was split into three parts, the fort of Eger became an important border fort, and Istvan Dobo defended it against the 4x numerous attacking Turkish troops. Geza Gardonyi wrote a famous book about this historical event.
In the centre of Eger, on Dobo Square, there is a statue of Istvan Dobo, made by Alajos Strobl in 1907. The monument has become one of the town's symbols.
