Keszthely is the largest town on the northern side of Lake Balaton, located close to where river Zala runs into the lake. The town is rich in famous sights, including the oldest museum of the county, the Balaton Museum, founded in 1898.
The museum offers a glimpse into life around the lake, and characteristic local activities, such as fishing, boating and bathing. Permanent exhibitions include the region's flora and fauna, local clothing and jewellery history from pre-historic times until today, as well as ruins from the past. The local artist, Janos Halapy has a memorial section. The museum is open all year round, every day except for Monday (and except for Sundays during off-season).
