The Budapest ZOO and Botanical Garden is situated close to Heroes’ Square and the Szechenyi Spa in the City Park, on the Pest side of the Hungarian capital. Founded in 1866, it is one of the world’s oldest zoos, presenting the flora and fauna of the world from the nordic territories to the tropics, with a palmery, a sea aquarium, a crocodile house and a fishing exhibition. Children may enjoy additional facilities, such as a playground, a pet house and a playhouse.
The zoo is open daily from 9am until 4pm during the winter months, 5pm on weekdays, 5:30pm on weekends in March and October, 5:30pm on weekdays and 6pm on weekends in April and September, and 6:30pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends during the summer seqson, May through August. The ticket offices close an hour, and the animal halls close 30 minutes before the general closing time. By public transportation, it is easy to access via the M1 metro to Hősök tere – Heroes’ Square or Széchenyi Fürdő – Széchenyi Spa station, or on the trolley bus (72, 75, 79) that stops right in front of the entrance.
