Gellert Hill is situated on the Buda side of the river, bordering the Danube on the East, Nap (Sun) Hill on the Northwest, Sas (Eagle) Hill on the Southwest, and Varhegy (Castle Hill) on the north. The area is a world heritage site since 1987. The steep hillside along the Danube, as well as the panorama view from the top of the hill is beautiful to behold. The hill is often called the pearl of Budapest.
Hot water springs of the area formed a number of caves on and beneath Gellert Hill. The St. Stephan's cave on the south-eastern side of the hill, is the most famous one. Partially enlarged, it hosts a small chapel.
