Margaret Bridge, Margit híd, is situated at the northern part of downtown Budapest. As part of the Main Ring, it connects two major routes over the Danube, and touches the southern end of Margaret Island. Built in 1876, it is the second permanent bridge of the Hungarian capital. It was enlarged in 1935-37, bombed during the Second World War, and rebuilt in 1947-48.
The middle of the bridge includes tram lines 4-6, with 2 traffic lines on either side, and a separate pedestrian walkway, used by bicycles as well. Renovation work on the bridge started in 2009, and while they last, the bridge will not be available for cars. At the end, the walkway will be wider, and the bicycle route will be separated.
