St Stephan's Basilica is situated in the heart of downtown Budapest, near Erzsebet Square, along the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Boulevard, not far from the Danube and the Parliament on Kossuth Lajos Square. The building, now one of the most notable church and tourist sight, took over 50 years to build, starting in 1850. The dedication took place in 1905. The Holy Right hand of Hungary’s first king is kept in its sanctuary.
On the top of the 96 metres high tower, visitors may enjoy a panorama view on the capital. The building is close to 90 metres long, and 55 metres wide – large enough for eight thousand people. Both the outer walls and the interior is rich in ornaments and unique decoration of fine arts. The Basilica has a famous organ and a fine choir, giving concerts on Sundays. Through the summer months, additional concerts with local and international artists are scheduled.
