The Sziget or Island Festival is an outstanding European Rock festival, held annually since 1993 in Budapest, on the Óbudai (old Buda) Island, which is also called Hajogyari or ship construction island, located in between Arpad and Megyeri Bridge on the northern part of the Hungarian capital. The first year was a student festival, the event was sponsored by Pepsi between 1996 and 2001, and was named Pepsi Island during this period.
The festival features art, cinema, dance, theatre and sport activities as well. Special attention is paid to nature protection. The event draw about 43 thousand visitors in the first year, which number has grown over 350 thousand since 2000.
